Theatre gathering pace By Adam Poulopoulos The construction for the new ASB Theatre is continuing, but it is over a year away from completion. The physical building is due to be completed in September next year, with the interior fitting, including for light and sound equipment, to take at least another six weeks after that. Currently the roof for the studio theatre, a display space at the Alfred Street end of the building, is being constructed. Continued page 2.

Arrest made after WINZ phone call

Theatre construction to be complete next year Continued from page 1. ASB Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley said construction was “about a third of the way done.” He said the building was larger than people passing by realised, and more progress was being made above ground now. “It’s an awkward one. It’s the bit below ground that took the most time. “I come back now and significant progress is being made each time, whereas before you’d go a few months and not see any change.” Columns for the auditorium part for the structure are also forming, but they have only reached 40 percent of their full height. Fully formed, they will come to a similar height

as Porse House across the road. “It will be close to the tallest building in the CBD,” Mr Moseley said. For the trust team, much of their focus now turns to a renewed fundraising drive in the warmer spring weather. “It’s continuous. We’re still fundraising and working with the government,” Mr Moseley said. “There are funds available to the government, so all we can do is put our application in and get our fair share.” The trust has an application with the Department of Internal Affairs’s Lottery Community Facilities Fund, and will find out the result of it in November.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested at a Koromiko address in relation to a telephone call directed at Work and Income staff in Blenheim yesterday morning. Armed Offenders Squad members surrounded the Koromiko house and arrested the man shortly after 1pm. Armed Offenders Squad members were also deployed from Nelson and Blenheim to assist with identifying and locating the caller. The arrest followed

the call, when the man threatened to come to the Blenheim office with a firearm. The Work and Income offices in Blenheim were put on lock down following the incident. Detective Senior Sergeant Ciaran Sloan said WINZ staff never faced any direct threat and the lock down was a precautionary measure to ensure staff safety until an arrest was made. No charges have yet been laid.

Volunteer mission for Laura By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough Girls’ College old girl is raising funds as she prepares to head to Africa for full-time volunteer work. Laura Monahan (pictured), born in Blenheim but now living in Auckland, plans to work for missionary organisation IRIS Global. She has set herself an $80,000 fundraising target, which will cover three months of study, and the first two years of volunteer work. Laura plans to head overseas next May, starting in Pemba, a city in northern Mozambique. She said she wants to help affect long-term change.

“It would mean everything. In a place of great need I can’t imagine anything better.

“I want to help people realise their potential and step out of poverty.” The volunteer work is set to include feeding the hungry, working with local community elders and rebuilding, as Mozambique was badly hit by flooding last year. Laura, the communications coordinator at LIFE church, said making the decision came down to a trade-off between home comforts and the chance to help. “At the beginning of the year I felt an overwhelming compassion for a great need, but at first I thought it was a bit ridiculous to be thinking about packing up. “Before I told anyone I was thinking

they would say ‘you won’t have your lipstick or your high heels. How are you going to hack it?’ “The more I asked God, the more I felt this was what I was made to do. “The numbers of people in need, we can’t fathom over here.” “Laura’s fundraising campaign began with a quiz night in Auckland last week. She plans to hold a fundraising event when she returns to Blenheim over Christmas and New Year. If you would like to donate to Laura, visit the Youcaring website and search ‘Laura goes to Africa.’

World rowing title win for Sophie By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough’s Sophie MacKenzie’s has added to her medal collection at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. MacKenzie (pictured left) and crew mate Julia Edward won gold in the lightweight women’s double sculls final, in a world-record time of six minutes, 49 seconds. They were almost two seconds clear of their nearest challengers, Canada, with China finishing third. The crew was not expected to win the event, as it was the first time they

had raced together. MacKenzie, fresh from winning gold in the same event at the under-23 world championships last month, came into the boat after Lucy Strack was ruled out with injury. Elsewhere, Blenheim brothers Robbie and Karl Manson finished second in the men’s double sculls B final, leaving them eighth overall. Their race was won by Great Britain. In total, New Zealand won six gold medals during the meet, their biggest golden haul.

Fire guts Main Street home By Adam Poulopoulos Fire service staff are appealing to Marlburians to take care when using candles after a Main Street house was gutted on Sunday. Three appliances from Blenheim, and one from Renwick, were called to the home at about 3am. The sole occupant, a man, escaped the blaze. Blenheim chief fire officer Rob Dalton said the man was “very fortunate” to get out in time. Firefighters received a delayed re-

His car was side swiped by a trailer while it was parked (legally,) sustaining considerable damage to the right rear wheel, a spokesperson told the Sun.

Mr Dalton said people should be careful when using candles. “If you’re going to use them make sure you extinguish them properly. “They should also be in proper candle bases, so they don’t fall over,” he said.

Residents and staff from local resthomes also took part in the walk with their families. The Memory Walk finished at the Forum, where stalls were set up with information and personal stories about Alzheimers.

Passed away unexpectedly at her Blenheim home on August 29, 2014 in her 50th year. Maryanne was one of three children, born and raised in Blenheim. Although she spent two years in Southland, Maryanne lived the majority of her life in Marlborough where she could be close to her four children, Kylie, Daryll, John and Jenny. Described as being a devoted mother and Nana, Maryanne loved being surrounded by her many grandchildren and was an avid knitter for them, and for many local charities in Blenheim. Prior to her passing, Maryanne

regularly knitted baby clothing for Bread of Life and Hope House. When she wasn’t knitting or tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, she always made herself available to friends and family who needed someone to talk to. “Mum spent a lot of time helping others, being a shoulder to cry on or someone to talk to which I know people really appreciated,” daughter Kylie McKendrick said. “She will be forever remembered and sadly missed by her family and those who knew her. “Her passing has left a huge gap that will never be filled, and we cannot express our thanks to everyone

who has supported us through this time.” A private service will be held this Fr iday for fam ily and close friends at 1:30pm at Geoffrey T Sowman’s Mayfield chapel. Any cards, messages and flowers can be sent to Kylie McKendrick at 97 Hospital Road, Blenheim.

Stubbornness sees a lifelong dream realised Renee wins second place at first ever body building championship Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim woman Renee Craw said it was her stubbornness and strict training ethic that saw her win second place in a body building championship at the weekend. The Nabba/WFF NZ Top of the South Body Building championships was held in Nelson’s Theatre Royal where Renee entered the Novice Figure category. Winning a podium position was an incredible feat considering this was her first time taking part in a body building event, something she had aspired to do from a young age. “It’s in the family genes I think,” Renee laughed. “My dad was once a power-lifting champion and my brother does weights, so the influence has always been there. Her journey began when her friend lost a lot of weight and competed in a body building competition. “I saw that she was living my dream so that really spurred me to

get training.” Renee wanted to shed the 27kg she had gained during her second pregnancy so began running, but after growing bored of that, she began weight lifting. Once that goal was achieved, she then set her sights on getting her body ‘competition ready’ and over the past nine months she has ridgidly stuck to her training. “I spent five days in the gym, I did one hour cardio sessions four times a week which was usually a run up the Wither Hills or walking the dog, and I had a really strict diet,” she said. “I think family and friends thought I was nuts,” Renee joked. “But I am a very stubborn person so I was determined to do it properly and be able to compete in this championship.” Preparations for the championship included dehydrating her body to make her muscles look bigger, and coating herself in three layers of dark tanning lotion “At one stage I was looking hungri-

ly at the lotion because it reminded me of Nutella,” she laughed. Once on stage, Renee said she was there more for the experience, but when it was announced she had won second place, the excitement kicked in. “It was amazing. This now means I go onto the nationals in October in Palmerston North which I am thrilled with,” she said. Renee’s next goal would ideally to win at nationals. “I have a picture of last year’s winner so I am working hard to look like her. “It’s all or nothing in this sport, I plan on going the whole way,” she said.

DRUGS, CASH SEIZED IN DRUG BUST

Package aims to help more people into first homes By Celeste Lodewyk The gover nment has announced it is doubling support for first home buyers into home ownership and encouraging the building of more affordable new homes, welcome news for many Marlburians. Currently known as the KiwiSaver First Home Subsidy, the government will be renaming it the KiwiSaver HomeStart package, and it comes into effect on April 1, 2015. The package comprises three changes and will cost an additional $218 million over the next five years. These changes include replacing the KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy with a KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant, doubling the support for buying a new home and increasing the house price limits.

Professional Advisor Association Board Member Karen EssexMooney sheds light on proposed changes to the KiwiSaver First Home Subsidy.

Blenheim mortgage adviser and Professional Advisor Association board member Karen Essex-

Mooney sheds some light on the proposed package and how the changes will benefit first home buyers. “As usual there will be confusion and misunderstandings around these changes. “It’s important that people don’t hold out on the misconception that they will be getting a larger amount of funds from the 1st of April. “For existing home purchases the subsidy does not change, it will remain $1000 per year for up to five years per person. The maximum per person is $5000. “For new builds the subsidy doubles, so it will be $2000 per year, up to $10,000 per person. “Currently the cap top figure is $300,000 but will change to $350,000 for Marlborough,” she said. After April 1 2015, buyers can

withdraw the members tax credit contribution that would amount to around 50 cents annually, to a maximum of $521.43 per year. “So the difference for someone buying now verses next year, if they were in KiwiSaver for five years it could be up to a maximum of $2607 extra they can draw out,” she said. National Candidate for Kaikoura Stuart Smith said in Marlborough last year 114 people received assistance under the KiwiSaver First Home Withdrawal Subsidy. He said the HomeStart package is estimated to lift this number to 1450 over the next five years. “The package is particularly focused on helping young people pull together a deposit. It is estimated that two thirds of the recipients of the HomeStart grants will be aged between 20 and 35,” he said.

Police seized several thousand dollars in cash and drugs in a raid on a Kaikoura property last Thursday. Sergeant Matt Boyce of Kaikoura Police said officers searched the property after receiving information that the occupiers were operating a commercial cannabis growing operation. The search revealed an indoor cannabis growing operation in a shipping container on the property. Officers were assisted by the police drug and currency detector dog from Christchurch, and seized dried cannabis material, along with 11 plants and cannabis oil. A 39-year-old Kaikoura man and a 40-year-old Kaikoura woman have been jointly charged with Possession of Cannabis for Supply, Cultivating Cannabis, Possession of Class B Drugs and Possession of Drug Utensils. They will appear in the Kaikoura District Court on September 26.

By Adam Poulopoulos A personal trainer is using her own experiences to help women get fitter and eat healthier. Natalie Gallagher (pictured,) who works at Snap Fitness, arrived in Marlborough from Scotland at the start of the year. She runs a holistic programme aimed at improving fitness levels, eating habits and selfesteem. She said she used what she learned during a tough period in her late teens and early 20s. “I had a very negative relationship with food when I was younger. “I used to binge-eat a lot and I didn’t exercise. “It was an insult from my boyfriend at the time that got me going, and I haven’t looked back.” She said a significant propor-

tion of people who came to her had an issue of some kind. “About 85 percent of ladies are affected, either with their image, or their relationship with food. “There’s a lot of pressure from society to conform to a certain body shape.” As part of the programme, participants are given an exercise routine and personal training sessions, while an optional extra, the food diary, helps to record what is being eaten. Natalie said the diet did not have to be restrictive, and factored in aspects like social occasions and food preferences. “I like pizza, chocolate and wine, but within a balanced diet. “The main focus is to get women to feel comfortable at a weight they are able to maintain, while not taking away foods they love.”

Mork and Mindy. He was a good actor, who made me laugh and comforted me from time-to-time.

Definitely Jumanji. I watched it when I was a kid, and really enjoyed it.

There are so many, but especially Good Morning Vietnam and Mrs. Doubtfire. I always liked his interviews too.

The movie Jack, when he played a child in an adult’s body.

It’d have to be Mrs. Doubtfire. That was a classic. The kids have it on video, and they absolutely love it. Mork and Mindy too.

A humbling sight Dear Ed, I was walking my dog along the Taylor River on Saturday and saw a long procession of purple t-shirt wearers being led by a bagpipes player. What an interesting sight it was. It was after reading their hard-tomiss t-shirts I realised it was for Alzheimers Marlborough, and may I say, what a wonderful idea it was.

If the purpose of the walk was to raise awareness, well it certainly achieved that. It brought back memories of two relatives who suffered from the disease and as sad and heartbreaking as it was to watch their decline, the support we had from our local organisation was amazing. So keep up the good work. Alzheimers Marlborough supporter

Digusted with WINZ threat Dear Ed, What is this world coming to! A man shooting an innocent WINZ worker in Ashburton, then some idiot phoning the Blenheim branch with similar threats. Soon we will be like America, having armed guards standing at every corner, not trusting anyone. I feel so sorry for those families who had loved ones gunned down, and I feel sorry for those here who had the threats made against them. What a waste of Police time, I hope he learns a very valuable lesson through whatever punishment he receives. Mary

Bypass Needed Dear Ed, I was at a meeting the other day and discussion centred on the need for a bypass east of Blenheim. All present - with no exception- were in favour of the bypass. They saw it as important and logical to get trucks off the Grove Road bridge and out of Blenheim’s Grove Road and Main Street and roundabouts It would cut 20 minutes off the

truck’s journey. Naturally as has been reported ‘truckies’ favour it. If highway traffic wants a meal or a bed for the night they will turn off otherwise it’s a frustrating drag for highway traffic through Blenheim. The imagined loss of retail business is a figment of the bypass opposition’s imagination. Frank Henry

Shaun Sutton Blenheim Mrs. Doubtfire is my favourite. That is hilarious.

Dear Ed, More abuse at sports matches. I was watching my child play the last of their soccer games at the weekend and I heard (young) children yelling out abuse and language I would have gladly soaped their mouths for. It’s an ongoing issue, and unfortunately it’s up to the child and their parents to sort this behaviour, but it’s still frustrating as it takes the shine away from your own children playing

their hardest on the field. What is the answer? Well a good old fashioned smack on the bottom is out of the question. Perhaps making that child apologise to the coach for disrupting the game would shame them out of the behaviour. Or perhaps not. Sadly it’s something that cannot be fixed overnight. Digusted parent

Old Man’s Beard Dear Ed, There have been letters on the subject of old man’s beard before. But nothing has been done by the authorities. So I am taking up the issue and asking why does not (a) the Marlborough District Council/ Marlborough Roads deal to the many cases of old man’s beard growing on roads and council reserve and (b) the Department of Conservation help and/ or subsidise farmers to eradicate old man’s beard? Old man’s beard is shallow rooting, easily grubbed out while thick trunks of it can be cut and then dabbed with a combination of diesel oil and 100per cent weedkiller. While there’s a cleanup perhaps Fish and Game can do something about the terrible eyesore of the willow skeletons in the Para Swamp? Frank Henry

Divine intervention More than six years after his near-death experience, Caltex Main Street owner Grant Stubbs’s story has resurfaced in a new book. Grant spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about his faith, that fateful day, and how it affected him. Grant Stubbs and I met on a sunny Blenheim day, much like many others, and much like the one that changed his life. The Caltex owner’s near miss in a microlight plane made international headlines, as media marvelled over how fortunate he and the pilot, friend Owen ‘O.B.’ Wilson, were to survive. Now, his story has been published again as part of American radio host Daniel Fazzina’s book ‘Divine Intervention: 50 True Stories of God’s Miracles Today.’ A congregant of the Blenheim Elim Church, Grant has always been a man of religious conviction. His father, David, is a Methodist minister, and Blenheim was one of many stops in Grant’s nomadic childhood. He attended Marlborough Boys’ College, and decided to set down roots in the area. “My family left, but I decided to stay. I got sick of moving,” he said. “It’s a nice community, a beautiful place to live, and a great place to raise kids.” A mechanic by trade, Grant bought Caltex, on its Grove Road site, in 1991. Fast-forward 17 years, and Grant began a defining year in his life. He bought the current Caltex site after he was unable to renew the lease for his Grove Road tanks, and soon after, wife Jenni bought him a flight voucher for his birthday. After church on Sunday, May 18, 2008, Grant and Owen took off in clear sunny conditions. After an hour’s flying, the microlight ran out of fuel as they approached a Marlborough Sounds mountain range, at an altitude of about 2500 feet. Grant said he began to pray. “Initially I was quite calm. I didn’t do the big scream and panic, but I guess as

Christians we’re not afraid of death.” As they approached the ridge, the microlight spluttered back into life, before failing again as they flew into open airspace. Grant was shocked Owen found a meadow to land safely in, the one place on the property not covered by livestock. “The animals can’t have known we were coming. We were gliding in without power,” he said. Soon after they landed the pair noticed a water pump tower near the plane, with a sign saying ‘Jesus is Lord.’ Grant said he was in no doubt a higher power had been at work. “If that isn’t a sign of God, I don’t know what is! “A bunch of different things happened which, when you put them together, lead you to realise God’s hand was on it.” He said the story “went berserk” on TV and radio, and in newspapers, around the globe. “I had friends from all over the world read about it in the paper. Daniel Fazzina read it in an American newspaper. “An American man on death row read the story, and made a recommitment to his faith before he died.” Grant said he and Owen had a renewed belief in the power of prayer. Looking back on the incident, he said returning home to Jenni and their three children, aged 15 and under at the time, had given him a new perspective. “After a near-death experience you have a new appreciation of life, family, things like that. “You start to think ‘what would have happened if you didn’t make it?’ and suddenly the grass seems greener, and everything is brighter.”

New branch opens Show off your talents on Grove Road

Marlborough A&P Association Home Industries committee member Katherine Dobby is encouraging people to get their entries in.

By Celeste Lodewyk In November last year the Grove Road business community welcomed Signs Now, a Picton based signage specialist that expanded its operations. Owned and operated by Craig Chapman, wife Chris and staff member Steve, Signs Now first opened around eight years ago. The business has grown considerably over the years, so much so that Craig decided to open a Blenheim branch. “I wanted to supply a better service to a growing Blenheim customer

base. Grove Road provided a great location and after opening the doors we immediately had interest,” he said. Signs Now specialises in vehicle/ boat graphics and wrapping. The wrapping is a film that is placed over the vehicle for the purpose of paint protection, advertising or covering the existing colour with another. The business also services a vast range of general signage requirements. Call in and see the team at 65 Grove Road Blenheim, and 2 Kent Road in Picton.

We are now open on Saturdays

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The highly anticipated Marlborough A & P Show is fast approaching, November 7 and 8, and entries are being called for the popular Home Industries section. This is the section where people can show off a huge range of creative skills from cooking, cheese making, needlework, through to photography and even craft brewing. Home Industries committee member Katherine Dobby said every year there are 'incredible' entries

placed in the show, and she hoped this year would be another success. "You don't have to be a professional or submit something deemed perfect, Home Industries is open to amateur entries so no one needs to feel pressured," she said. There are entry forms available at the Sun Office or alternatively you can enter and pay online at www.showdayonline.com For more information phone 03 578 5822.

Figures indicate potential for drought in Marlborough The latest figures indicate Marlborough may be heading for an early spring drought. Only 19.1 millimetres of rain fell in the months of July and August, the least amount to fall in these two months since records began in 1930. Plant and food scientist Rob Agnew said there needs to be plentiful September rain if the province is to avoid an early

spring drought. “In any given year if Blenheim received only 19.1 mm rainfall over two consecutive months during spring and summer, then the province would look very dry, and a serious drought could well be imminent or in force. “In the winter, it is only low evaporative demand and very little plant water use that keeps the province looking green

when little rainfall is received, as is currently the case.” The August rainfall total of 9.8 millimetres is 15 percent of the long-term average, and the second-driest August since records began in 1930. The dry two months followed a wet June, when rainfall was nearly twice the long-term average.

Council help for insulation By Celeste Lodewyk Every winter home owners are asked the same question. “Is your home insulated making it warm and healthy to live in”? When the government was offering its three-year insulation programme ‘Warm Up New Zealand,’ a number of Marlborough home owners took advantage of this and are now reaping the rewards. The funding for this programme has since ended, but the Marlborough District Council has stepped in and introduced its own ‘Home Insulation Scheme’ to continue helping home owners to afford insulation. “The interest in home insulation and solar water heating installations has had a recent upsurge, so council has ensured a scheme is available to the community,” a spokesperson said. For the 2013/2014 financial year council received 53 applications. This was down on the year before with 105 applications, but this was when the government’s Warm Up NZ programme funding was still available. How the Home Insulation Scheme works: As a ratepayer, you contact any of the three approved service providers which are listed with the council. They then visit your home and provide an assessment for free. This assessment will include the insulation options that are available to your home. The service provider will then explain the option available to you through the council’s scheme, and either they or the

council will help you to complete your application form. How do I qualify: To be eligible for this scheme you must: • Be a ratepayer • Be up to date with rate payments • Have a house built before 2000 and • Use one of the council’s approved service providers Council can approve the application up to five working days after it has been received, providing it has been filled in correctly and your rates are up to date.

Repayments A ‘targeted rate’ is calculated for you and added to your regular rates bill. This rate is over nine years, making this scheme a popular option for people who cannot afford a lump sum payment. Repayments include interest. The rate is currently set at seven percent. For more information about the Home Insulation Scheme and for a list of approved service providers, visit council’s website www. marlborough.govt.nz or contact the MDC on 03 520 7400.

Doors and windows • Check hinges and catches or latches. If they are loose, tighten them up. • If windows don’t fit in their frames snugly, contact your local glass professional to have them repaired.

• Weather stripping can be used to seal gaps around many doors or windows. Again, for the best results, call in the professionals. • If you get draughts from around door or window trims, seal behind them with clear or

paintable sealant. • For gaps under doors, you can fit draught excluders, either brush strip types or for external doors, spring loaded automatic seals. • Damaged rubber seals around aluminium joinery can easily be replaced.

Prodigious parsnip By Adam Poulopoulos When he started digging, Blenheim man Grahame Daines could not have predicted quite what he’d find. Mr Daines dug up a 2.7 kilogram, 70 centimetre-long parsnip in his garden on Friday. He said it began when a friend asked if he could dig one up for dinner. “I said ‘alright I’ll get one. And I did.’ “I saw the crown was big, so I dug out the small one behind it. I got down to about six inches and I saw the size of it. “I was almost standing in the hole when I managed to get it out.” He said it was the biggest he had grown in 56 years of gardening. The vegetable was planted on September 10 last year.

Federated Farmers call for ‘added value’ Marlborough Federated Farmers wants production to shift to an "added value" rather than commodity basis. "New Zealand needs to derive far better value from its agricultural production by adding value through processing," said Marlborough Federated Farmers’ president Greg Harris at the organisation’s recent meeting. “The current bulk commodity emphasis is illogical. We’ve got to improve the value by processing here.” David Dillon of lower Waihopai Valley said New Zealand exports more logs than any other country. “The forestry industry is looking to diversify away from that,” he said. Timber from New Zealand was exported in raw log form to

Greg Harris

China, processed and then sent back to New Zealand as timber for Christchurch’s post-earthquake rebuilding. “Really it’s quite bizarre and stupid,” he said. Northbank farmer Brian Powell

agreed, saying there was a need to improve value by processing within New Zealand. “Bulk commodity emphasis is crazy.” Giving his president’s report, Greg Harris focused on wool, and said there was a need to have the wool industry managed efficiently by an over-arching body to ensure the collective good for wool. “It takes good custodianship and stockmanship along with supporting science and technological advancement to remain efficient and competitive.” This would be much more powerful and effective if funded collectively. “A wool levy will help leverage government and research funding,” he said.
